With the acquisition of state-of-the-art robotic surgical equipment known as the daVinci Surgical System, St Vincent's Private Hospital has established itself as a national leader in keyhole laparoscopic surgery.
Unlike normal laparoscopic or thoracoscopic surgery, the daVinci System works intuitively, allowing a surgeon to move his hands in the same way he would during open surgery. Seated at a remote console, the surgeon operates hand controls while viewing a full-colour, three-dimensional image of the operating site, magnified up to 15 times. Robotic arms and instruments inside the patient imitate the surgeon's hands movements. For patients, use of the daVinci Robot requires only three or four small incisions of less than 1 cm each, typical of keyhole surgery.
