The Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (Ear, Nose & Throat) provides a broad range of services. The members of the Department have sub-specialty interests and expertise in all major areas involving the ear, nose and throat.

Ear Surgery & Implantable Hearing Aid Surgery

The St Vincent's Department has an international reputation for management of ear disorders, acoustic tumours and skull base surgery. The Department specialises in both adult ear and paediatric ear disease. There is an active program in the use of the latest implantable hearing aids and cochlear implants. Laser surgery techniques are also used in ear surgery.

Acoustic Neuroma Surgery & Skull Base Surgery

All members have specific training in the management of skull base tumours and its surgery. This includes tumours of the ear, lateral skull base and anterior skull base.

Head & Neck Tumour Surgery

All patients with head and neck tumours, both benign and malignant, are assessed and managed. A campus-wide multidisciplinary clinic in head and neck oncology is held weekly.

The Department has a particular interest in the management of laryngeal cancer with expertise in partial laryngeal surgery and laser surgery. Ongoing research into cancer of the head and neck is pursued at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.

Nasal, Sinus & Anterior Skull Base Surgery

The Department specialises in sinus diseases and rhinology including advanced endoscopic sinus procedures for the management of chronic sinusitis and in particular frontal sinus conditions. Uncommon conditions such as mucocoeles, fungal sinusitis, cerebral spinal fluid leaks and encephalocoeles, are also managed.

Snoring & Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

These difficult problems are managed in conjunction with Sleep Physicians at St Vincent's Clinic. A range of surgical and non-surgical options are available.

Laryngology

Expertise in the management of voice and airway disorders is provided by the Department. The management of vocal cord palsy, laryngeal and tracheal stenosis is managed by both endoscopic and external techniques. The Department works closely with the Department of Speech Pathology at St Vincent's General Hospital. A range of newer techniques for the investigation of voice disorders are used.
