General Patient Guide

Welcome to St Vincent’s Private Hospital

ImageYour wellbeing and speedy recovery are our primary objectives. That is why we encourage you to maintain a positive attitude and participate actively in your treatment. There are often several steps in the process of getting well and the more you know about your upcoming treatment the better prepared you will be.

Our General Patient Guide provides a comprehensive range of information, however, should you have any questions please call the Customer Services Team on (02) 8382 7111.

The care team

The most important member of this team is you. Only with your active participation can we achieve the best possible outcome for you. To support you in getting well, there is a whole team of medical specialists and health professionals dedicated to your care and recovery.

A discussion with your doctor

Your specialist doctor manages your care with the assistance of other medical practitioners, nurses, diagnosticians, therapists, dieticians, food production and environmental services staff. Everyone on your care team is there to help you. You may like to ask your doctor some questions about your treatment, recovery and any follow-up treatment:

  • What is involved in my treatment/procedure, what are the risks?
  • What should I expect during my recovery period?
  • How long will my recovery take?
  • Will there be activity restrictions after leaving hospital?
  • Will I need physiotherapy?
  • Will I need rehabilitation?

Pre-admission appointments

We recommend you make an appointment to visit our Pre-Admission Centre as soon as you receive your confirmation letter. In particular, patients who are scheduled for surgery or a procedure on the same day as their admission are encouraged to attend the Pre-Admission Centre.  It is important we have all the information we need about you and your medical condition before you arrive for your stay.  read more

Free parking can be arranged for the duration of this visit.
Appointments: call (02) 8382 7459, Monday to Friday, 8.00 am - 4.00 pm.

Discharge planning

If you think you will need assistance after leaving the Hospital, or your doctor has advised that you will be going to rehabilitation, please ask to see a member of our Discharge Planning Team or the social worker, who can help you with information on the range of services available.

Your admission

On the morning of your arrival it is best to use the main entrance at 406 Victoria Street, Darlinghurst. You will be shown to the Admission Lounge which is in the foyer, just past the main reception desk.

At this time, the process of admitting you to Hospital will be taken care of, including pre-payment of your account. You will have been contacted by the Hospital and informed of any gaps between our charges and the anticipated health fund benefits or miscellaneous payments.

Day of surgery admissions (DOSA)

Patients admitted on the same day as their surgery are taken to the day of surgery area (DOSA) to await their procedure. Following the procedure, they will be taken to their allocated room.

Your recovery

Today’s medical procedures are more technically advanced than even a few years ago. This has a great impact on the speed of recovery and you will probably be pleasantly surprised about the short time you need to be in the Hospital.

Planning for your discharge

For most patients, going home after the completion of treatment will be fairly straightforward. However, there are some patients who have special requirements for their care following discharge. It is important to identify your needs early so that referrals can be made to services that are available in your area. read more

Discharge from the ward

When your doctor has confirmed your discharge, your nurse will complete a discharge form and check that you have the medications you will need and any x-rays or scans. Details of the doctor’s appointments and referrals to a community nurse (if required) will also be provided.

Checking out of the Hospital

We ask you to advise the nurse or receptionist when you are leaving the ward. Please ensure you do the following:

  • depart from room by 10.00 am
  • make arrangements for transport home
  • pick up all medications, x-rays and scans
  • collect follow-up information provided by the Hospital
  • pack and check your room for personal belongings.

Settling the bill

Before you leave you will need to settle your Hospital account. A Patient Services Representative in the Admissions area on level 4 will provide you with an itemised account and explain the charges. If there are any late charges, such as last day medications, we will post them to you. We accept payment in cash, by major credit card, cheque and traveller’s cheque in Australian dollars. The Hospital has EFTPOS facilities but we regret no cash out service is available.

Questions about your account

Our Patient Services Representative is more than happy to assist with any questions you may have about charges, benefits, payments or informed financial consent.
The office is open from Monday to Friday, from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm.
The phone number is (02) 8382 7480.

Accounts from doctors

Your doctor, other specialist consultant doctors who assisted in your treatment and some allied health professionals will send their accounts separately.  All these bills should be settled directly (not through the Hospital). Medicare and your health fund may cover a proportion of the account.

Pastoral Care

Our Pastoral Care team is available to administer the Sacraments of the Sick, Anointing and Reconciliation. Holy Communion is provided for those who request it. Regular visits are also made by Jewish, Greek Orthodox, Presbyterian, Uniting Church, Salvation Army, Lutheran and Seventh Day Adventist chaplains.

You and your visitors are most welcome to visit our chapel, which is open every day on level 4 for prayer and reflection.  read more
