Menu changes

During your hospital stay, your meals may change due to your surgery. Your doctor may order a special diet because of your medical condition. You may be fasting or on a fluid diet for a number of meals before or after your surgery. If you have any concerns speak with the Nutrition Assistant or notify your nurse.

Good nutrition

Why is eating so important?

Sound nutrition, in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, is beneficial to good health and longevity. It reduces the incidence of diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. Australians in the twenty first century are living longer and it is important that quality of life and independence are maintained as long as possible.

Whether you are active and healthy, or sick in hospital, good eating is important in maintaining health. Research shows that poorly nourished patients have a longer length of stay in hospital and more medical complications than well nourished patients. Eating well helps wounds and damaged tissues to heal better and enhances your body’s immune system to fight infection.

What should I eat?

Choose a variety of foods and aim for at least three meals a day. Include a variety of foods from each of the following food groups in your diet daily: fruits, vegetables, breads, cereals, lean meats, fish and dairy products.
